Message from the President

At the meeting of the Board held on 16th November 2010 V. Ex. Comp. Edwards was elected unopposed as Vice-President.

It was reported that all bursary recipients for 2010 had successfully completed their respective subjects in the first semester of the year and had received their follow up cheques.

As an amount of $4,000.00 had been included in the 2011 for Bursaries it was agreed that a maximum of four Thornton Pollard Bursaries would be awarded. As in previous years it was unanimously agreed by the Board Members that the awards be awarded strictly on merit and unless the standard of applicants was acceptable by the Board, the recommended number need not necessarily be awarded.

Following the receipt of eight applications for bursaries for the year 2011 the Board met on 8th February to consider these applications. As one of the applicants had applied for a Grand Lodge Bursary the Grand Secretary indicated that with an OP4 she would receive a bursary from Grand Lodge consequently to avoid duplication she would not be considered for a Thornton Pollard Bursary. She was subsequently awarded a bursary from Grand Lodge.

After vigorous discussion on the merits of each candidate, treating each candidate individually but focusing on OP scores as a primary indicator, votes were cast and the four highest ranked applicants were chosen to be recipients of bursaries for 2011, the four being:

Dominic Alexander Brian Nantes (OP1), grandson of the Most Excellent First Grand Principal, who will be studying for a Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Science at the University of Queensland

Bonnie Louise Johnston (OP2), grand-daughter of Very Excellent Companion William Johnston of Kedron Daylight Chapter and third member of the Johnston family to be awarded a bursary, who will be studying for a Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of Arts at the University of Queensland.

Tracey Louise Goodger (OP5), grand-daughter of Very Excellent Companion Hugh Goodger of Limestone Caledonian Chapter, who will be studying for a Bachelor of Design - Architecture Studies at QUT.

Jack Wilton Lauder (OP8), son of Very Excellent Companion David Lauder of Tablelands Chapter who will be following in his father’s footsteps and studying for a Bachelor of Science at the University of Queensland.

On 22nd February I welcomed on behalf of the Most Excellent First Grand Principal three of the recipients plus sponsors and relatives of all four recipients to an award presentation held in the Ann Street Masonic Centre where the certificates and first payment cheques were presented by the Most Excellent First Grand Principal.

On completion of the formal Award Ceremony a light repast was enjoyed by those present which had been prepared by Mrs Moya Nantes, Mrs Jill Phipps, Mrs Cheryl Edwards and Tetty Mackinnon for which thanks were gratefully extended.

Ian C Wylde

President of the Board of Benevolence
