 Report from the President

At the meeting of the Board held on 4th October 2011 it was decided to award up to three Thornton Pollard Bursaries in 2012 but with the flexibility of awarding a maximum of four should the quality of the applications be of such a standard to warrant the issue of four Bursaries.

At the meeting of the Board held on 7th February 2012 it was reported that three of last year’s recipients had successfully completed the first semester of their studies and consequently the balance of their bursaries, namely $400.00 had been paid. However the fourth recipient had not successfully completed all his subjects in the first semester and had been advised that if he wished to receive his follow-up payment he needed to successfully complete his unsuccessful subject. No response has been received to this recommendation and as the subject has not been satisfactorily completed the balance of the bursary has obviously been withheld.

Four applications for bursaries had been received and after vigorous discussion on the merits of each candidate, treating each candidate individually but focusing on OP scores and other scholistic primary indicators, votes were cast and the two highest ranked applicants were chosen to be recipients of bursaries for 2012, the two being:

  • Alyssa Maree Currie (OP3), grand-daughter of V Ex Comp Ron Capps of Townsville Royal Arch Chapter. who will be studying for a Bachelor of Mathematics and Bachelor of Games and Interactive Entertainment at QUT.
  • Brendan William Venz (OP6), grandson of Rt Ex Comp Ian Ross of Gympie Royal Arch Chapter. who will be studying for a Bachelor of Aviation/Diploma of Flight Management at Griffith University.

On 28th February I welcomed on behalf of the Most Excellent First Grand Principal the two recipients along with family members and sponsors to the award presentation when Most Excellent Companion Nantes, Most Excellent First Grand Principal, presented the certificates and the first payment cheque of $600.00 On completion of the formal proceedings a light repast, which had been prepared by Mrs Jill Phipps, Mrs Cheryl Edwards and Tetty McKinnon, was enjoyed by those present.

Consideration is to be given concerning the viability of the Board of Benevolence. Of the two meetings of the Board held during the course of the year the first is generally only of an administrative nature and the second involves deliberations to determine to whom bursaries will be awarded both of which could effectively be conducted by a sub-committee of Grand Committee.

Finally may I thank the Grand Scribe Ezra and respective members of the Board for their support during my tenure as President.
