Report of Grand Treasurer at Grand Installation 2016

Most Excellent, I move that the Interim Financial Statements being the Balance Sheet and Profit and Loss Statement for the 9 months ended 30th September, 2016 as printed and circulated be received.

Most Excellent.  I believe that the accounts are reasonably sound and self explanatory.  There are a couple of matters I would like to highlight:-

  1. We continue to have detailed financial reports with comparisons to budget produced and reported monthly to Grand Committee.  There have been no significant deviations from our established budget.
  1. The interest Income amount shown on the accounts for the 9 months shows a loss of $2,500.  The equities market took quite a downturn in the 2 or 3 months leading up until June, 2016, and this resulted in a loss on the value of our investments of $ 11,000 in the June half year, so we in fact earned interest of about $8,500 before we recognised the investment loss.  These investments have been coming back in value since then, but we have not received current value statements to include in the interim accounts.  These will be shown on the 2016 year end statement.
  1. All debts and tax have been paid. I believe we are in a position to meet all debts as they fall due.
  1. Budgeting for 2017 is currently being completed and will be presented to Grand Committee for approval in November.  However early indications are that there will need to be an increase in membership fees of $5.00 per member, although, we will attempt to retain the $5.00 early payment discount.
  1. All tax returns have been completed and lodged by the appropriate due dates, and the 2016 assessment has been received.

Most excellent, I am happy to answer any question that there may be.

Most Excellent, I move that the Financial Statements as circulated, be adopted and, together with my report, entered into the minutes of this Grand Convocation.

 Report from the President

At the meeting of the Board held on 4th October 2011 it was decided to award up to three Thornton Pollard Bursaries in 2012 but with the flexibility of awarding a maximum of four should the quality of the applications be of such a standard to warrant the issue of four Bursaries.

At the meeting of the Board held on 7th February 2012 it was reported that three of last year’s recipients had successfully completed the first semester of their studies and consequently the balance of their bursaries, namely $400.00 had been paid. However the fourth recipient had not successfully completed all his subjects in the first semester and had been advised that if he wished to receive his follow-up payment he needed to successfully complete his unsuccessful subject. No response has been received to this recommendation and as the subject has not been satisfactorily completed the balance of the bursary has obviously been withheld.

Four applications for bursaries had been received and after vigorous discussion on the merits of each candidate, treating each candidate individually but focusing on OP scores and other scholistic primary indicators, votes were cast and the two highest ranked applicants were chosen to be recipients of bursaries for 2012, the two being:

  • Alyssa Maree Currie (OP3), grand-daughter of V Ex Comp Ron Capps of Townsville Royal Arch Chapter. who will be studying for a Bachelor of Mathematics and Bachelor of Games and Interactive Entertainment at QUT.
  • Brendan William Venz (OP6), grandson of Rt Ex Comp Ian Ross of Gympie Royal Arch Chapter. who will be studying for a Bachelor of Aviation/Diploma of Flight Management at Griffith University.

On 28th February I welcomed on behalf of the Most Excellent First Grand Principal the two recipients along with family members and sponsors to the award presentation when Most Excellent Companion Nantes, Most Excellent First Grand Principal, presented the certificates and the first payment cheque of $600.00 On completion of the formal proceedings a light repast, which had been prepared by Mrs Jill Phipps, Mrs Cheryl Edwards and Tetty McKinnon, was enjoyed by those present.

Consideration is to be given concerning the viability of the Board of Benevolence. Of the two meetings of the Board held during the course of the year the first is generally only of an administrative nature and the second involves deliberations to determine to whom bursaries will be awarded both of which could effectively be conducted by a sub-committee of Grand Committee.

Finally may I thank the Grand Scribe Ezra and respective members of the Board for their support during my tenure as President.

Ian C Wylde

President of the Board of Benevolence

Most Excellent Companion A. Thornton Pollard was the First Grand Principal of the Supreme Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Queensland from 1950 until his passing on the 22nd May, 1953. He was a tireless worker and educator for Freemasonry and travelled many thousands of kilometres in his service to this Grand Chapter.

On his passing, a donation was made to Grand Chapter from his estate to set up a legacy for the annual awarding of Bursaries for the furtherance of tertiary education.

The Thornton Pollard Bursary is awarded by the Board of Benevolence of the Supreme Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Queensland to students entering into tertiary studies at a value to be determined by the Board.

Those who may apply are any child, grandchild or ward of a financial member of any Royal Arch Chapter within juridiction of the Supreme Grand Chapter of Queensland, or any child, grandchild or ward of a deceased member of any Royal Arch Chapter in Queensland who was financial at the time of his death, provided that the death of the former member occurred during the compass of the applicant's secondary education.

The Board at its meeting considered applications for the Thornton Pollard Bursaries. The applications covered a wide range of courses and the participants should be congratulated for their hard work during their secondary schooling. The reasons for the selection of courses for study by the applicants are many and show a desire to succeed and to contribute to the wellbeing of Society. After due consideration The Board decided to award Bursaries as follows:

(Jon) Nantes, GZ and President of the Board of Benevolence R. Ex. Comp. I.C.
